Intel snags former Palm and Apple VP Mike Bell for smartphone plans

Palm’s brain drain continues as it loses another executive to a major competitor. Mike Bell, most recently senior vice president for Product Development at Palm, has moved on to a similar role at Intel’s Ultra Mobility Group as Director of Smartphone Product Development, Engadget reports . In an internal email, Intel said that Bell “will help build and lead a team to build breakthrough smartphone reference designs to accelerate Intel Architecture into the market.” Bell was a “good get” for Palm.

Despite all claims by PC purists that the iPad is a toy that has no real purpose–especially in the corporate world, there are large enterprises embracing the tablet device. It may be designed as a portable media consumption device for consumers , but the iPad also provides a unique mobile computing platform for business as well. Bloomberg reports that Wells Fargo has approved the iPad for business use, and that SAP AG, Tellabs Inc., and Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz unit are all using the Apple iPad for various tasks ranging from e-mail access to empowering the mobile sales force with the tools to approve shipping orders or verify auto financing options

The latest Android-based mobile phone Motorola and Verizon are set to add to the DROID family, namely the DROID X by Motorola, is already available for pre-order at Best Buy. Starting with June 25, all Verizon customers interested in having the next gen DROID in their hands at launch can head over to Best Buy to order a unit in advance. “With the buzz we’ve seen around the Android platform, Best Buy is confident that consumers will be thrilled about the Verizon DROID X by Motorola pre-sale,” said Scott Anderson, senior director of merchandising at Best Buy Mobile.

On Thursday, mobile phone carrier U.S. Cellular announced plans to launch a wide range of new devices on its airwaves during the ongoing year. Among them, the carrier mentioned the Samsung Acclaim and HTC Desire, both powered by Google’s Android OS, as well as the BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry 9670, the latter being described as “a BlackBerry flip smartphone with a full QWERTY keyboard.” Other devices should also arrive at the carrier before 2010 is over.
