Is Prague the New Amsterdam? Czech Republic Drug Laws Most Liberal in Europe

February 4, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ The decriminalization of marijuana, cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, LSD and amphetamines for “personal use” in the Czech Republic hasn’t turned Prague into Amsterdam one month into the country’s new drug-tolerance policy. However, some feel the government hasn’t – and won’t – step up to support more drug prevention and assistance programs.

Under the new legislation, a person can have up to 15g of marijuana, 1g of cocaine, 1.5g of heroin, 4 ecstasy tablets, 5 LSD tablets and 2g of amphetamines, all for what is being labeled as personal use. Possessing higher amounts still brings a criminal penalty.

Although certain groups are more than happy with the government’s new policy, others – such as the governments of Austria and Germany – are less than enthused. Worried about smuggling, Germany will institute more controls on its border, while Austria has expressed “serious concern” with the policy.
